Antique (1842) Signed Dual-Block Jacquard Woven Coverlet by George Renner and Peter Leidig.
Pennsylvania Americana. Figured And Fancy Double-Cloth Coverlet. Heavy geometric weave, a Hallmark style of early American folk textiles. Body features alternating tile-like medallions, compass stars, and delicate stylized floral emblems reminiscent of traditional European tiles and early American patchwork. Signature Border. Bottom features a stunning rose-and-leaf Border, framed by a continuous classical vine pattern.
G. Renner & P. Leidig operated a prominent weaving partnership in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania during the late 1830s and 1840s. Distinct horizontal color shift dividing the text block (light blue on top, dark indigo on the bottom) indicates this coverlet is a double-cloth weave, which interlaces two independent layers of fabric to create structurally integrated, crisp geometric graphics with completely inverted colorways on the reverse side. Corner blocks are highly legible. Addition of the charming independent thistle/bellflower branch emblem woven directly below the year serves as a beautifully specific maker’s Hallmark.
Pre-Civil War History. Found in as-is condition in Pennsylvania. Staining and discoloration throughout. Fringe is not fully intact. Some loss throughout. The center seam is split in some areas, see photographs. Coverlet Fully Intact.
