Distinctive textile art style that was highly popular in North America during the late 19th century. This style peaked during the Victorian Era (circa 1880-1900). Heavily influenced by the Japanese Pavilion at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, which popularized asymmetrical, fractured-looking art styles.
Corners + edges show fraying. No rips or tears. Unlike traditional quilts that follow orderly geometric blocks, crazy quilts utilize a random patchwork design. Differently shaped fabric remnants are arranged and hand-stitched together into an abstract collage. Found in as-is condition in upstate New York.
