Sketch depicts George Washington and his guide, Christopher Gist, crossing the Allegheny River on a makeshift log raft in December 1753. Faintly written cursive text underneath the sketch. This scene illustrates a famous, perilous moment from George Washington's early life rather than his more well-known Revolutionary War crossing of the Delaware River. Late 1753, a 21 year old Major George Washington was sent by the Governor of Virginia into the Ohio Country to deliver an ultimatum to French forces encroaching on British-claimed territory.
Victorian Era Art. From the collection of Oswin H Herb 1899-1900 from his time at K.S.N.S. Keystone State Normal School which is now Kutztown university of Pennsylvania. No signature or date on the board. Age appropriate distress + discoloration present. Drawing captures the moment Washington is using a long pole to propel the log raft forward through the ice, with Gist bracing behind him. Late 1800s and early 1900s, Normal Schools were institutions dedicated to training teachers, and Kutztown had a robust art education program.
