Herb from his time attending the Keystone State Normal School (K.S.N.S.) in Kutztown, Pennsylvania - now known as Kutztown University of Pennsyvlania. Students there were trained rigorously in classical technical drafting and illustration techniques, which is mirrored perfectly in the meticulous cross-hatching of these cyclamen leaves.
Age toning to board. Distress, notably at the bottom. Signed bottom right corner. Collection from 1899-1900. American student artist active at the turn of the century. K.S.N.S. was a prominent 19th-century teacher-training institution. Standard turn-of-the-century illustration board was the preferred medium for pen-and-ink art at the time because its dense, rigid surface prevented the heavy ink from bleeding or warping the surface.
