Saddled horse standing facing toward the right, detailed with a mane, tail, saddle, and bridle. Dog standing in the lower right foreground, facing forward/slightly left toward the horse. Faint pencil sketches of small plants or weeds near the bottom edge. Illustration boards provide a rigid, heavy backing designed specifically to prevent buckling when working with ink, wash, or markers. Art Student. During this late-19th to early 20th-century era, students at normal schools and art academies routinely used rigid illustration board tot practice precise layout work, ink studies, and Master copies.

Signed Bottom Right. Age appropriate distress + discoloration. From the collection of Oswin H. Herb from 1899-1900 during his time at Keystone State Normal School K.S.N.S. which is now Kutztown University. Student Portfolio Piece. This piece reflects that academic training through its clean, deliberate ink line work - focusing heavily on anatomy, proportion, and form rather than background shading. Golden age of American illustration when rigorous academic foundations were laid at schools like Keystone State Normal.
