Antique (1830s) Early American Overshot Coverlet.
Traditional handwoven bed covering. Based on its distinctive construction and materials, this blanket is highly consistent with textiles handwoven during the early 19th century (circa 1800-1840). Uses an overshot weave pattern, where a thick, colored pattern weft “shoots over” a structured plain-weave background fabric. Center seam is clear - running vertically down the middle.
Discoloration throughout. No rips or tears. Graphic, geometric blocks repeat across the field and finish with a specialized decorative border weave at the bottom edge. Fully Reversible. Main body pattern on this blanket is closely related to a classic horitical four-shaft arrangement often called the “Chariot Wheel” - sometimes variationally blended with a “Table” block design. Early American household weavers shared these pattern drafts extensively, frequently giving identical threading instructions different regional names depending on the state, era, or family tradition. Found in as-is condition in upstate New York.
