Redwork is a classic style of American Needlework that reached peak popularity between the late 19th century and the 1920s. During this era, women’s magazines distributed simple line-art patterns. These individual square samplers - Penny squares - were commonly embroidered by individuals or as community projects, then pieced together into an heirloom bedspread.
Faint, localized yellow storage spots. In some areas there is loss to the redwork stitching // embroidery. No rips or tears. Found in as-is condition in Pennsylvania. Redwork became a major domestic trend thanks to the development of colorfast Turkey Red cotton thread, which could be washed repeatedly without bleeding onto the white or cream background fabric. Traditional Textile. Incredible quality stem stitching used for the redwork outline and the precise diamond-pattern hand quilting that runs across the entire piece.
