Vintage (1950s) Embroidered Baby Quilt - Significant Staining
Featuring scalloped edge with blue trim and a central oval medallion of stitched blue ducks. Blue ducks are hand stitched using a cross-stitch technique. Bills and feet are rendered in a back-stitch using orange thread, and the blue oval border is a simple stem or back-stitch. Dense texture ripples surrounding the oval are incredibly tight, hand-quilted stippling/contour lines. High level of detail is characteristic of mid-20th-century stamped quilt kits, where a maker would buy a pre-printed whole cloth top, embroider the design, and then spend hours hand-quilting the background.
Significant staining + loss to edges. Storage stains visible. Loss to edges and embroidered ducks. Blue bleed can be seen through the back of the quilt. Very Soft. Found in as-is condition in Pennsylvania. Stains likely caused by scour residue and aged cotton starches. The cotton fibers are crinkled and plump, fabric has retained its structural integrity - other than the edges. Oxidation Present.
