Vintage (1950s) Folk Art Memory Jar.
Fascinating Object. Memory Ware, Mourning Jug, or Spirit Jar. Resurfacing in the mid-20th century, the practice evolved into a widespread form of American folk art and home scrapbooking. Families would cover jars, pitchers, or crocks to memorialize a loved one or preserve a family time capsule. While the compound was wet, they would press in an array of small sentimental keepsakes and everyday "found objects".
Some loss. One prong on the orange fork is missing and a piece beside it appears to have dislodged. Age appropriate distress + discoloration. Found in as-is condition in Pennsylvania. Created by Miss Alice Petersheim of Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Rich, eclectic mix of mid-20th-century items : seashells, vintage costume jewelry, assorted buttons, and small trinkets. Bivalves and small snail shells.
