Vintage (1970s) Signed Original Art : Still Life Painting - Oil On Linen Canvas by Cowels.
Potted houseplant with wide leaves - resembling a calathea or coleus, a central round ceramic container or vase, a white pitcher or cloth in the background, and lemons on a vibrant red drapery surface. Loose, open texture of the unprimed linen support is clearly visible beneath the layers of paint. Artist utilized a relatively dry brush strategy in areas like the white pitcher and background, allowing the natural color and cross-hatch grid of the raw textile to show through and add physical depth to the composition.
Age Appropriate Wear. Signed Bottom Right. Painterly, expressive brushwork and rich impasto texture. Mid-century expressionist styling. Bright lemon nestled right next to a bunch of green grapes. Houseplant in the left lavender pot shows broad, fleshy red and gold leaves characteristic of a Calathea or Coleus. Mid Century American. Modernist Painter. Natural Textile Weave. Age-Related Oxidation present. Foxing in some areas.
